As part of our efforts to keep you informed about Yahad - In Unum’s activities, as well as other news from around the world related to the Eastern Holocaust, we are launching a monthly e-newsletter, Yahad - In Unum News. Resource Center opens in Paris

Yahad - In Unum, the association chaired by Father Patrick Desbois, in partnership with the Sorbonne University, opened its new Resource Center in Paris, dedicated to advancing the research on Nazi mass executions of Jews and Roma/Gypsies in Eastern Europe during World War II.

Media coverage intensifies around Center opening

The opening of the Resource Center spurred a new round of press coverage in France and internationally. In the weeks preceding and following the opening, major stories appeared in Germany’s Der Spiegel, France’s Le Figaro and the Jerusalem Post and a story was broadcast nationally in the U.S. on National Public Radio.

First missions to Russia: Report

Yahad has undertaken its first intensive investigations of mass execution sites in Western Russia. Father Desbois said that these initial missions provided valuable learnings for the team as well as some surprising differences with field team experiences in the Ukraine.

Father Desbois to present at Global Forum in December

Father Desbois has been invited to speak at the 2009 Global Forum for Combating Antisemitism, being held December 16-17 in Jerusalem. Father Desbois will participate in a panel discussion on “Historical Revisionism, Holocaust Denial and the ‘New’ Antisemitism.”

Yahad endorses “Dignity Return”

The President of the Russian Jewish Congress, Mr. Yuri Kanner, in coordination with Rabbi Marc Schneier, Director of the U.S. branch of the World Jewish Congress, have announced a plan to provide burial services to the victims of Nazi mass executions in Eastern Europe during World War II. Yahad - In Unum is, of course, supporting this effort to protect the mass graves according to Jewish laws of Jews killed on the territory of countries occupied by Fascist units of the Third Reich.

Project to survey Holocaust-era mass graves

The Conference of European Rabbis, the continent’s main Orthodox rabbinical association is organizing a campaign by youth groups in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia to survey mass graves and Jewish cemeteries in the Baltic states where Jewish communities were largely destroyed during World War II. The effort is being sponsored by the Conference for Jewish Material Claims against Germany.

USHMM seminar on the Holocaust in the Soviet Union

Father Desbois will take part in the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s January seminar on “The Holocaust in the Soviet Union: New Sources, New Perspective for Use in Teaching.”
